Terms.
The agreement between you and Vokt Limited, based in Papamoa, New Zealand, who operates vokt.
In plain English
vokt estimates when your Road User Charges will run out and reminds you before your Warrant of Fitness and Registration expire. It's a reminder tool, not a guarantee. Keeping Road User Charges, Warrant of Fitness and Registration current is still your responsibility. Cancel any time in Settings; no refunds for a change of mind, but your Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act rights stand regardless.
1. What vokt does
vokt reads your vehicle's odometer, checks it against the Road User Charges licence held on the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi register, works out how much distance is left and estimates the date it will run out. It also reminds you before your Warrant of Fitness and Registration expire. One account covers one vehicle.
2. What vokt does not do
vokt does not buy Road User Charges for you, and never handles that payment. You buy Road User Charges from New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi directly. vokt is not part of New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, is not endorsed by New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tesla or any other vehicle manufacturer. The only action vokt ever takes on your vehicle is waking it, if it's asleep, to take a reading. It cannot drive, lock, unlock, or otherwise control your vehicle.
3. Eligibility
To use vokt, you must:
- be 18 years of age or older;
- own the vehicle you connect, or be otherwise authorised to manage it; and
- hold one account per vehicle, with one vehicle per account.
Teslas are the only vehicle make currently compatible with vokt. Other vehicle makes may become available at a later date.
4. What you are responsible for
Keeping your Road User Charges licence, Warrant of Fitness and Registration current is your responsibility.
The run-out date is an estimate based on the odometer readings vokt takes to determine your average daily driving distance. This date can change as your daily driving does. The distance remaining is based on two figures, your odometer and your licence, and is only as current as the last time vokt could read both. vokt shows when each was last checked, for that reason.
vokt depends on Tesla and on the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi register being reachable.
5. Acceptable use
Your vokt account is personal to you. In using the service, you must not:
- share your sign-in access with, or allow the service to be used by, anyone else;
- connect, or attempt to connect, a vehicle you do not own and are not otherwise authorised to manage;
- access, or attempt to access, another customer's account or any part of the service not intended for you;
- interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to circumvent any security, rate limit or access control the service uses;
- use a bot, scraper or other automated means to access the service or extract data from it, except through the account features vokt itself provides for that purpose;
- misrepresent your identity or your authority to manage a vehicle you connect; or
- use the service for an unlawful purpose, or in a way that otherwise breaches these terms.
We may suspend or close an account used in breach of this section; see section 13.
6. Paying
vokt costs $49.99 a year or $4.99 a month, billed in advance and renewing until you cancel. vokt emails a reminder before an annual renewal charges. Card payments are handled by Stripe, and your card details never reach vokt.
7. Cancelling, and refunds
Cancel any time in Settings. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for, and nothing charges again after that.
We don't give refunds for a change of mind. That's separate from your rights if the service itself is at fault: nothing here limits what you're owed under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.
8. Estimates, and what vokt is not liable for
vokt is an estimation and reminder tool. Keeping your Road User Charges licence, Warrant of Fitness and Registration current remains your own legal responsibility as the vehicle owner.
The figures vokt shows depend on Tesla and the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi register answering correctly. A reading can be delayed, missing, or wrong, and either service can change how it answers or stop answering altogether. vokt says on screen when a figure is not current rather than showing an old one as though it were.
To the extent the law allows it, vokt is not liable for:
- a Road User Charges infringement fee;
- a Warrant of Fitness or Registration lapse; or
- any other penalty arising from relying on an estimate or a reminder vokt gave, or from one it should have given and didn't, because a reading was delayed, missing or wrong.
This doesn't limit what you're owed under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.
9. Setting-aside amounts are guidance, not financial advice
Any weekly, fortnightly or monthly amount vokt suggests setting aside for your next Road User Charges purchase is general guidance based on your own driving, not financial advice, and it isn't tailored to your wider finances. It's a simple calculation based on your distance and your licence, not a recommendation about how to manage your money.
10. Intellectual property
The vokt name, the wordmark, and the app and everything in it belong to Vokt Limited. Nothing here gives you a right to copy, resell or build on any of it beyond using the product as intended.
Your own information, including your vehicle details, your readings and your account, stays yours. Using the service doesn't give Vokt Limited any ownership of it.
11. Service availability
vokt depends on Tesla, the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi register, and vokt's own infrastructure all being reachable. We aim to keep the service running but don't guarantee uninterrupted availability, and may pause it for maintenance or necessary changes. We'll address genuine outages as promptly as we reasonably can.
12. If you're unhappy with the service
Email us at support@vokt.co.nz first. Most issues can be resolved there. If we can't resolve a privacy-related complaint, you may take it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. If it concerns the service itself or a charge, the Fair Trading Act and Consumer Guarantees Act routes, including the Disputes Tribunal, remain open to you, as they would with any trader.
13. Suspension and ending your account
You may delete your account at any time in Settings. This immediately and permanently removes everything vokt holds about you, beyond what New Zealand law requires us to keep in our own payment records, and cancels your subscription at the same time. You won't be charged again.
We may suspend or close your account where:
- you breach these terms, including the acceptable use rules in section 5;
- you breach the law in connecting to or using the service; or
- doing so is necessary to protect vokt, another customer, or a third party from harm.
Where practical, we'll give you notice and an opportunity to resolve the issue first; we won't where doing so would put vokt, another customer, or a third party at risk. We'll tell you why your account was suspended or closed.
A suspension doesn't cancel your subscription, and billing continues during it. If we close your account permanently under this section, we'll also cancel your subscription at that point; you won't be charged again, and the remaining period isn't refunded.
14. Changes to these terms
If a change affects billing, cancellation or what we're responsible for:
- we'll email you with reasonable notice before it takes effect;
- if you don't want to accept it, you may cancel before the effective date and won't be charged again; and
- continuing your subscription past the effective date means you've accepted the change.
A clarification that doesn't change what vokt actually does is made with the date at the top of this page updated.
15. If vokt changes hands
We may assign this agreement to another company, on notice, if the business is sold, merged or restructured.
16. Where this applies
New Zealand law applies, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
